When it’s time to replace your home’s cooling system, one question often comes up:
“What’s the difference between a heat pump and a regular air conditioner?”

Here’s how it works:
1. The air inside your house passes over the evaporator coil.
2. The refrigerant flowing through the coil absorbs heat from your home.
3. That heat is carried outside through refrigerant lines.
4. The outdoor unit releases the heat into the outdoor air.
5. The cooled air is sent back through your home’s ductwork.
During the summer, you likely wouldn’t notice any difference between the two systems. Both provide cool, comfortable air.
So what Makes a Heat Pump Different?
The biggest difference is that a heat pump can reverse the process.
Instead of only moving heat out of your home, a heat pump can also pull heat from the outdoor air—even when it’s cold outside—and move that heat indoors.
Think of it like a two-way street:
– Summer: Heat moves from inside your home to outside.
– Winter: Heat moves from outside into your home.
A cooling-only air conditioner can only travel one direction.
But How Can It Heat When It’s Cold Outside?
Even cold winter air contains heat energy.
A heat pump uses refrigerant and a special reversing valve to capture that heat and transfer it inside your home. Think of a reversing valve like a railroad switch. The compressor is the train, carrying refrigerant (and heat with it). When the heat pump is running in heat, the reversing valve changes the track, so the refrigerant can flow in the opposite direction, bringing it inside the home! While this process becomes less efficient during extremely cold temperatures, modern heat pumps can continue providing heat well below freezing.
In colder climates, many homeowners pair a heat pump with a gas furnace. This combination is called a dual-fuel system. The heat pump handles the mild weather efficiently, while the furnace takes over during the coldest days.
Which System Is Right for You?
A cooling-only air conditioner may be a good choice if:
– Your home already has a reliable gas furnace.
– You only need cooling from the outdoor unit.
– You want a straightforward replacement for your existing AC.
A heat pump may be a great option if:
